Terrain Training - Steps and Stairs

Turn the terrain around your neighborhood into the ultimate gym.

One of my favorite workouts is what I call "terrain training." Terrain training is simply taking advantage of whatever type of terrain you have and using it to your advantage. So for example, in the mountains, I like to make my way up a hill and use the downhill to slalom the pine trees (and sliding on their needles) to mimic skiing. Or using a dry riverbed for intense drills, by loading my legs and springing boulder-to-boulder. Other types of terrain training can involve grassy knolls, urban steps and sandy beaches. This is the first post in a series about terrain training - how to scout it, how to create workouts for maximum benefits, and how to keep it safe.

My Kickass Workout Weapon of Choice

I just got back to my desk after slipping out for an hour of fun, adventurous butt-kicking (my own). Whenever I have had a little too much fun or strayed away from my healthy lifestyle, I don't fret about it, I take care of it right away (really, I do!). So this morning, after a weekend of catching up with girlfriends, eating and drinking a tad too much, I head for the hills – Nordic Walking Poles in hand.

Nordic skiers are among the fittest athletes on the planet and walking poles are a cross training tool used by competitive Nordic skiers to stay in shape in the off-season. Here are some workout ideas for you...

A SIMPLE Recipe to Blast Fat Fast!

Running or walking, intervals are a time efficient way to get lean!
Interval training is alternating periods of hard work with low-intensity recoveries. This type of training can help push you off a plateau—boosting aerobic fitness and burning a load of calories.

The Plan
Run with it. To blast your body into shedding fat, do this interval workout once or twice a week. Not a runner? See recommendations below.

Multi-Site Workout: Urban Neighborhood

/Urban workouts are a blast and easy to create.

Here is a workout that I taught in a local San Francisco park, near the new Athleta store, on Fillmore.

Spring into Action (and that Speedo) with a Good Ol' Fashioned Plan

Funny how much the weather and the calendar play with our psychology. Seems once the 1st of the year hits, or the first signs of Spring come along, so does the anxiety - the "bikini" blitz - the OMG! I've got to lose weight NOW syndrome. Here is a note I received in my inbox (tina@outdoorfitness.com) and since I know that Abby is not alone, I thought I'd share it.

Hi Tina…HELP! I put on 8 lbs. over the winter and I have a trip to Mexico coming up next month. I've been working out consistently for about 4 weeks and I try to eat sensibly, (about 2000 – 2400 kcal per day).  I also try to workout 4-6x per week, but, I have not lost an ounce. What else should I be doing?   Abby  Petaluma, CA
